1) Understand Your Purpose

Are you looking for a company that can help you with email marketing, search engine optimization, social media or something else? It’s important to know exactly what your online needs are so that you can hire a company that specializes in those areas. If you want someone who focuses on SEO and social media, they will be able to make quicker and more effective recommendations than someone who offers a wider range of services. Every marketing technique is different and should be handled by someone who has experience with it. Focus on what matters most to your business and look for an agency that caters specifically to those needs.

2) Know What You Need

In order to hire a great company for your online marketing needs, you have to know what you need. Whether it’s social media management or website design, knowing what tasks are most important for your business is essential in finding a company that can do all of them well. Additionally, look for companies that offer a range of services and who seem to be experts in all of them—this means they’re more likely to do a good job across your board. Some companies specialize in one area but are also happy to work with other companies when needed, so if social media isn’t super important right now, you don’t need to worry about hiring someone who doesn’t focus on it.

3) Contact a Few Companies

After you’ve decided to hire an online marketing company, it’s time to begin vetting potential candidates. Look at a few companies (at least three) and interview them to see which one best meets your needs. A solid marketing strategy is essential, but so is a good working relationship with your hired gun. Remember that if you hire an agency, they may be able to bring you better results than if you handled things on your own—but hiring will almost always cost more than DIYing it yourself. Think carefully about how much time and money you want to invest in your project before jumping in too deep.

4) Research the Company

One of your top priorities when it comes to finding an online marketing company is making sure that they have a great track record. Because they are working with your business, you want to make sure that you are going to someone who has proven themselves time and time again. A great way to do that is to look through their previous client list and learn about their successes. At least 3-5 references should be easy for them to get back to you on, so take advantage of that fact before moving forward with any potential contract.

5) Set Up an Interview

When looking for online marketing companies, don’t settle on your first choice. Interview several to make sure you find someone who can meet your needs. Make sure that they know what they are doing and how they will achieve results you want before hiring them to work on your business. You should also create a list of questions to ask potential online marketing companies in an interview so that you will be well prepared. These questions will help you better evaluate which one is more suited for your needs than others. It may also help if you contact other businesses that have used their services before and see if they were satisfied with their performance and customer service as well as other details about their experience dealing with them.

6) Get a Second Opinion

When searching for a marketing company, make sure to shop around and ask other businesses that are in your same industry who they recommend. You can ask them if they’ve used that particular company or if they know of any companies that may be able to help you out. Keep in mind, however, that when searching for an online marketing company you should only choose those with extensive experience working with startups and small businesses. And you should never go with a company based solely on price—you get what you pay for! Make sure to look into a business’s previous clientele and testimonials before making your final decision.

7) Discuss Budgets, Deadlines, and Expectations

One of my biggest pet peeves when talking with potential clients is when they treat hiring an online marketing company like it’s just another one of their daily responsibilities. Instead, I believe that you should have fun with it! First, sit down and make a list of 3 to 5 objectives you want your online marketing company to achieve on your behalf. Then, go find yourself a good game of golf (or whatever your favorite game is). As you enjoy yourself, think about what kind of relationship you want to have with your new online marketing company. After all, they’re going to be working directly with you... so do they treat their current clients well? Do they respond quickly and professionally? Are they easy to reach? Most importantly – do you like them?

8) Evaluate Potential for Success

Before you get started looking for an online marketing company, it’s a good idea to have a clear picture of your objectives. Do you want to build brand awareness? Generate leads? Increase website traffic? All three of these goals are important but they will require different approaches. Before you start your search, identify which goal(s) is/are most important to your organization. That way, when you evaluate potential vendors for their ability to deliver on that goal, everything is measured against that same metric. If there’s not a clear alignment between what you want and what they provide, move on—it’s not worth it in the long run to choose anyone but someone who can help meet your goals.

9) Reach an Agreement

As you start your online marketing search, I want to be clear about something. This is not going to be a sterile checklist process. You need to have fun with it! A-B-C (or any other letter of your choice) doesn’t stand for Automated Business Consultant, but it could. Don’t get stuck in what I call Consultant-speak. If they send you a long list of questions that include things like Do you know your conversion ratio? and then provide suggestions on how you should fix it, move on. Really? You don’t know what your conversion ratio is?

10) Have Fun with it!

One of my favorite pieces of advice to give clients and one that I use personally is have fun with it. If you find an online marketing company and things aren’t working out, try a different one. Things don’t always work out perfectly when it comes to business but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for them in your life or that you should give up! Keep searching until you find an online marketing company who really knows their stuff AND has personality—just make sure they put your needs first.
